Preventing Infection Among Patients with Peritoneal Dialysis

Men and women who have severe problems with their kidneys often need to undergo dialysis treatment to maintain the balance in the body, health experts say. Infection is a common problem among individuals who are undergoing peritoneal dialysis, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC). This problem is highly preventable when instructions are followed. If the peritoneum gets infected, it would be difficult for the patient to continue with the treatment. There are even patients who have filed GranuFlo dialysis injury lawsuit after experiencing complications.

The general rules that may apply are the following, as advised by the NKUDIC:

  •  Keep supplies in a cool, clean, dry place.
  • Inspect the supplies (i.e. bag of solution) for any signs of contamination. Do not use when the bad has been compromised.
  • Perform the exchanges in a clean, well-lit area.
  • Always perform hand washing when handling the catheter.
  • Use antiseptic when cleaning the exit site daily.
  • Wear a surgical mask during the exchanges.
  • Look out for signs of infection (i.e. fever, nausea, vomiting, pain, redness, unusual color of the solution and catheter cuff has been expelled.)

Keeping the area clean will not only prevent infection but will also aid patients in avoiding other health complications.
